讲座时间:2016413日(周三)16:15

讲座地点:4-B104

主讲人及内容简介:

INTRO: Stefanie Kinnamon graduated from Grinnell College with a degree in Spanish and having studied a bit of French and Italian as well. She spent a semester abroad in Seville, Spain and has continued studying languages while living and working in Asia. Barely a week after graduation, she arrived in Shanghai to begin teaching English in Taizhou. She spent three years there before moving on to Korea. Four years of living far away from the pure delight that is Chinese cuisine was quite enough, thank you, and now she’s back to do her part in making sure that every restaurant owner can send his or her children to college. Though a great deal of her time is spent stuffing her face with food and her mind with characters, she still finds time to run the occasional marathon. u, under the Department of Chinese Language for International students.

TOPIC BRIEFING: It is fitting that someone who has spent almost half of her life traveling hails from Kansas City, Missouri, starting point of the Oregon Trail. Living three blocks away from historic Westport, with its covered wagon monument built in remembrance of the pioneer families that set off in search of a better life in California, ensured that she had a healthy spirit of adventure. The forging of the 3,500km wagon route across the western United States includes everything from corporate greed to inspiring examples of human resilience. So come, acquire a healthy appreciation for modern methods of travel and learn a bit about an exciting era in American history on the way.

TOPIC BRIEFING: Our education had a huge influence on our lives – how we live, what we know, what we believe. But are we, British or Chinese, giving the next generation the best possible education that we can? Are there shortfalls that could be improved? This lecture will compare the British and Chinese education systems to see what we can learn from each other and briefly look at one country that seems to have achieved a near-perfect combination of a world-class education and a happy, carefree childhood.
